(Slay News) – A former staffer for the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has spoken out to claim that rumors about his ex-boss having an affair with a lobbyist are true.
Steve Schmidt is publicly airing the former Republican senator’s dirty laundry after falling out with the McCain family.
Steve Schmidt was a GOP political consultant before leaving the party over President Donald Trump.
He helped found the Lincoln Project, a notorious group of ex-GOP consultants who went after Trump in the 2020 election.
Schmidt, who also served under former President George W. Bush, went digging around McCain’s closet and found some ugly skeletons.
He says it was true that McCain had a longtime affair with a lobbyist who he gave special favors when her clients had business before the Senate Commerce Committee, which Arizona senator chaired.
He also says that McCain, who helped promote the fake Trump-Russia story, actually did have ties to Vladimir Putin and his corrupt oligarchs.
According to Schmidt, McCain’s foundation still does have ties to the Russian leader.
Schmidt writes: “Senator McCain denied his long relationship with the lobbyist – to whom he was credibly accused of providing special favors – dozens of times to my face. After the New York Times story – which accurately detailed that relationship – was attacked and successfully discredited by the campaign under my direction, John McCain told me the truth backstage at an event in Ohio.
“Understandably, he was very concerned about this potentially campaign-ending issue.
“He kept saying, ‘The campaign is over.’
“I reassured him that it was behind us.
“However, John McCain was convinced it would soon be over. Similar accusations and relationships had ended campaigns in the recent past.
“In fact, John McCain looked at me and said he did not understand how he could go on with his presidential run by saying, ‘Boy, I had a long relationship with her.’
“I was livid and flew home to California.
“After he obsessively called for days afterwards, I (foolishly) returned to the campaign trail.
Schmidt spoke to Axios today about why he went public after all this time.
“There is some soft consensus that has emerged, mostly from soft people, that responding to smears and slurs and insanity is some combination of unhinged or giving attention,” he said.
“This is as profoundly wrong a sensibility as there could conceivably be.
“I just completely reject the idea at every conceivable level — in part informed by 14 years of pain and abuse — that carrying a secret is healthy. It’s not.”
“I will sleep softly tonight — unburdened and much lighter than I was yesterday morning.”
When asked about attacking a man who can’t defend himself. “It’s the truth,” Schmidt said.
“It’s history. John McCain does not exist in a protected space.”
“What will happen next is a number of people will go out and try to debunk what I said, maybe,” he said.
“And if they do, the conclusions of that effort will be solidifying the proof of what I said.”
Schmidt also said Meghan McCain is “spoiled” and often erupts in “epic meltdowns” when she doesn’t get her way.

4/ who were waiting to see her father speak and took the time to do it deserved to have him show up on time. That was the way John McCain saw it. He was appalled by @MeghanMcCain conduct on the campaign. Appalled and embarrassed. The tantrums were beyond anything I have
